The Second Level

The main staircase leads up to the second and third levels. The staircase alone is a work of art. Take a few minutes to feel the substantial walnut handrail, and look up and down to discover that the handrail runs continuously without interruption for four stories. You will also discover that the stairs are illuminated by an old world-style custom copper skylight, perfectly positioned directly above.

By the time you reach the second level, you will have noticed the home’s incredible doors and door hardware. The handmade architectural hardware in a polished nickel finish is fitted like jewelry into custom fabricated, eight foot tall, 2¼ inch thick, solid walnut doors.

The second level is largely comprised by the home’s opulent master suite.

You enter the bedroom via a magnificent dressing suite. The dressing room on your left has already been fully outfitted with custom casework, mirrors and an island with additional storage. The dressing room on the right will be finished with the input of the home’s new owner. It could be built out as another closet, an en suite study, or as a nursery for a newborn. A walk-in closet is located at the bedroom’s south end. It too will be built out with input from the new owner.

The bedroom is purposefully located at the rear of the home, far from the sounds of the city. Casework was designed for storage and/or to obscure a plasma television. However, it could be replaced with a gas fireplace if that is your preference. French doors open out to a small balcony offering views of your garden terrace and the gardens of the neighboring mansions on Howe Street.

The master bath offers a serene, spa-like oasis ideal for relaxation and comfort. Highlights include:

  • Two custom vanities, each with a bow front cabinet with drawers on either side, framed by paneled walls with beveled mirrors above.
  • A heated marble mosaic floor in rich, neutral tones that compliment the room’s white and nickel finishes.
  • A free-standing Waterworks tub positioned within an oval-shaped niche that mirrors the shape of the tub. The surrounding walls are adorned with mosaic tile with a panel design.
  • A well proportioned steam shower with frameless glass shower door and heated bench seating.
  • Art Deco-inspired polished nickel lighting including fixtures that reflect up, highlighting the bath’s silver-leafed ceiling.

The ceiling in the master hall, primary dressing room and master bath has been enhanced with a silver leaf finish. The result is pure magic as the reflective quality of the ceiling captures the light in an ever-changing spectrum of color and light.

The master suite also includes a morning kitchen with refrigerator and microwave, conveniently located for your first pot of coffee or an evening night cap.

A second bedroom suite is located at the front end of the second level. A favorite room in the house, this bedroom includes a built-in window seat overlooking the treetops along Orchard Street. The home’s architect envisioned this room as child’s bedroom, a guest bedroom, or as an extension of the master bedroom – perhaps a study or library. This bedroom includes a wall of closets and a stunning attached bath.

One of the two laundry centers in the home is located in the hall on this level.
